Ranbir Kapoor Says Ramayana Needs 10-Part-Film, Part Two 50% Shot

As anticipation around Ramayana continues to build, Ranbir Kapoor has offered a fresh perspective on the sheer scale of the mythological epic. The actor, who plays Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari's ambitious directorial, said the story is vast enough that it could easily have been adapted into ten films. He also revealed a major update on Ramayana: Part Two, even as the team prepares for the Diwali 2026 release of Part One. The film also stars Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Sita, and is produced by Namit Malhotra.

Ranbir Says Ramayana Could Have Been a '10-Part' Film

Reflecting on the challenge of bringing one of India's greatest epics to screen, Ranbir admitted it was creatively demanding to condense the sprawling narrative into just two films. He credited director Nitesh Tiwari and the writing team for managing to retain the story's emotional and philosophical depth despite the constraints.

In a recent interview with The Direct, he said, "To be honest, to tell Ramayana, you probably need a 10-part movie, but the kind of conciseness in two parts was very hard."

A Modern Take Through Technology, Not Story Changes

When asked how the film approaches the ancient epic from a contemporary lens, Ranbir clarified that the shift lies not in the story itself, but in the filmmaking technology used to bring it to life today. He noted that while Ramayana has been told and retold for thousands of years — through theatre, radio, music and earlier films — modern visual effects now allow filmmakers to present it on a scale never seen before. He added that staying close to the simple soul of the story is what ultimately helps it connect with a wider audience.

No Need for Creative Reinterpretation, Says Ranbir

The actor also pushed back on the idea that Ramayana needed major reinterpretation to appeal to modern viewers. He said the text has endured for over 4,000 years and doesn't require significant creative liberties. Speaking about the epic's relevance, he described Lord Rama as a moral compass for millions of people worldwide, adding that the story's themes — courage, the triumph of good over evil, rightfulness, forgiveness, compassion and ego — offer timeless life lessons. According to him, anyone who truly understands Ramayana comes away a better person.

Part Two Already 50% Shot, Says Ranbir

In a surprise update, Ranbir Kapoor revealed that filming for Ramayana: Part Two is already halfway complete, even before Part One has hit theatres. He explained that since the story is a continuous narrative, a significant portion of the sequel was shot alongside the first film. He also teased that Part Two will be "even larger, more entertaining," with Hanuman — played by Sunny Deol — taking on a much bigger role in the sequel.

What to Expect from Part One

Ramayana: Part One is reportedly set to end on a major cliffhanger, leading directly into the epic confrontation between Lord Rama and Ravana. Interestingly, both Ranbir Kapoor and Yash have confirmed that they have not shot any scenes together for the first part, suggesting that the much-anticipated face-off between the two characters has been saved largely for Part Two.
