'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Trailer Returns to Westeros
HBO has unleashed the first electrifying trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the latest dive into George R.R. Martin's sprawling Westeros universe, captivating fans at New York Comic Con.
Set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones and 72 years after House of the Dragon, this prequel series trades the epic sprawl of dragons and thrones for a mud-soaked, knightly odyssey that feels refreshingly grounded.
Based on Martin's beloved Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, the series follows the unlikely duo of Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall – a towering, naive but fiercely brave young knight played by Peter Claffey – and his pint-sized squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell).
Their adventures unfold in a Targaryen-ruled realm where the Iron Throne still gleams fresh, and the embers of the last dragon's memory smolder. The trailer teases a world of jousting tournaments, brutal battles, and chivalric exploits, laced with Targaryen crimson banners, chainmail clanks, and a fleeting glimpse of a prophetic comet streaking the sky.

What sets this apart? A surprising dash of humor amid the grit. "It's close and hard," showrunner Ira Parker told Comic Con crowds, emphasizing the show's intimate lens through Dunk's eyes. "We wanted the audience to feel what he feels – the mud, the dirt, the shit. The pain, the agony, the irritation." Production flooded sets with filth to capture the raw physicality of medieval life: knights gasping under helmets, squires dodging lances, and peasants toiling in the shadows. Parker likened it to "14th-century Britain – hard-nose, grind-it-out, gritty medieval knights, cold with a really light, hopeful touch." No grand sorcery here; it's street-level Westeros, starting "right at the bottom," far from lords and ladies.
The ensemble boasts Finn Bennett as the fiery Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as the noble Prince Baelor, Sam Spruell as the brooding Prince Maekar, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, a spirited Dornish puppeteer who catches Dunk's eye. Martin, executive producer and writer, teased on his blog that the show is "much shorter" than its predecessors, with "a much different tone." Yet, true to form, "it's still Westeros, so no one is truly safe."

Premiering in January 2026 on HBO and Max, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms arrives as House of the Dragon Season 3 looms in 2026, following mixed fan reactions to the dragon-heavy spin-off. Early buzz suggests this tale of wandering heroes and tourney intrigue could recapture the unpredictable magic that hooked millions. In a franchise weary of fire and blood, might a knight's honor – and a squire's wit – forge the next legend?
