WhatsApp Leverages Holi Engagement to Deepen User Connections

As India prepares for Holi, WhatsApp is highlighting features that shape how users coordinate and celebrate the festival online.

The strategy shows how the Meta Platforms-owned messaging platform is increasing engagement during cultural events while keeping the platform largely free from advertising in markets such as India.

Messaging platforms typically record higher activity during festivals as families and friends exchange greetings, organise gatherings and share photos and videos.

WhatsApp is using this seasonal spike by promoting tools that help users coordinate group chats and share updates.

The move reflects how messaging services are expanding beyond basic communication into platforms that support shared experiences.

  • WhatsApp boosts engagement with Holi-focused messaging features
  • Voice Chat and Scheduled Calls enhance festival coordination
  • Meta’s WhatsApp expands Status tools for Holi celebrations

One feature receiving attention is Voice Chat within groups. It allows users to join or leave conversations without triggering a group call notification. The feature reduces disruption in large group chats, where planning for festival events can quickly become chaotic. By allowing casual voice participation without a formal call, the platform supports the informal coordination that often happens during occasions such as Holi.

WhatsApp is also promoting Scheduled Calls, which allow users to plan video calls in advance. The feature helps families and friends who live in different cities or countries join virtual celebrations at a specific time. With increasing migration and global mobility, many families rely on digital platforms to stay connected during festivals and family events.

The platform is also expanding its Status feature with tools such as music overlays, collage-style layouts, stickers and interactive prompts. These additions allow users to share festival moments through photos and short updates in a more visual format. The changes bring Status closer to lightweight creator-style formats commonly used across social media platforms.

Group management features are also being strengthened. Updates include member tags, event reminders and instant text stickers designed to organise conversations in large chats. These tools help users manage group discussions more effectively and keep track of plans during busy festival periods.

By aligning product updates with cultural moments such as Holi, WhatsApp is increasing everyday usage without depending heavily on advertisements. The approach keeps the focus on private conversations and shared moments, while ensuring the platform remains central to digital communication during major social occasions.
