Mirabai Chanu Creates History with 3rd Gold at Commonwealth Games 2026

India's very own weightlifter Mirabai Chanu entered the history books yet again as she clinched a 3rd consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. She confirmed her 4th medal in the quadrennial competition, having secured podium finishes in 2014, 2018, and 2022 previously.

The Olympic silver medallist produced another commanding performance, finishing well ahead of the rest of the field while breaking multiple records on her way to the title.

The 31-year-old from Manipur lifted a total of 190kg, made up of 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk. Her effort was enough to set new Commonwealth Games records in the snatch, while she also established new Commonwealth Games records in the clean and jerk and overall total.

Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong settled for the silver medal with a total lift of 168kg, finishing 22kg behind the Indian star. The huge gap underlined Mirabai Chanu's complete control throughout the competition.

A Shaky Start Overcome With Determination

The start, however, was not straightforward. Mirabai Chanu failed to clear her opening snatch attempt at 82kg, giving her rivals a brief opening. But the experienced lifter quickly put that behind her — she successfully lifted the weight in her next attempt before going on to clear 85kg, which put her at the top of the standings and added another record to her name.

She faced another setback in the clean and jerk after failing her opening attempt at 105kg. Once again, Mirabai showed why she is one of India's greatest weightlifters, returning for her second attempt to lift the same weight comfortably - sealing the gold medal while also rewriting the Commonwealth Games records in the clean and jerk and total lift.

With the title already secured and no competitor close to challenging her, Mirabai chanu decided against taking her final attempt. The decision was made to avoid unnecessary strain, with the Asian Games less than two months away.

Completing a Hat-Trick of CWG Titles

The victory added another major achievement to Mirabai's decorated career. After winning Commonwealth Games gold medals in Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022, she has now completed a hat-trick of titles. Once again, she proved why she remains India's biggest name in weightlifting, delivering another record-breaking performance on one of the sport's biggest stages.
