WhatsApp Launches "Not Even WhatsApp" Privacy Campaign
WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, has launched its biggest global privacy campaign yet, called "Not Even WhatsApp." With over 3 billion monthly users, the app is doubling down on its promise to keep chats private using end-to-end encryption, meaning no one—not even WhatsApp—can read your messages. The campaign started on May 19, 2025, and is all about reassuring users that their personal conversations stay secure.
Key Highlights:
- WhatsApp launches global "Not Even WhatsApp" campaign to reinforce end-to-end encryption
- In India, Aamir Khan voices the campaign's ad, promoting new Advanced Chat Privacy features
- WhatsApp rolls out Privacy Checkup amid ongoing concerns over metadata and past policy issues
In India, where more than 500 million people use WhatsApp, the campaign’s making waves across 16 states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. It includes a cool TV ad filmed in Delhi, with Bollywood star Aamir Khan voicing the Indian version. The ad gives a playful view from “the other side of your phone screen,” showing that whether you’re sending voice notes, selfies, or personal messages, they’re protected. This vibes with WhatsApp’s new “Advanced Chat Privacy” feature, which stops your stuff from being shared outside the app and lets you tweak who sees what.
With everyone worrying more about online privacy these days, WhatsApp’s campaign is timely. It uses the Signal protocol for encryption, which tech experts like the Electronic Frontier Foundation give a big thumbs-up. That said, some folks are skeptical since flagged messages might still get checked by moderators, leaving a few question marks about total privacy.
WhatsApp’s also throwing in a Privacy Checkup tool to help you lock down your account and customize settings easily. This comes as the app deals with some heat in India a Rs 213 crore fine from the Competition Commission over its 2021 privacy policy, which Meta’s fighting. That policy got people talking about WhatsApp’s metadata collection.

With “Not Even WhatsApp,” the app’s working hard to keep its huge user base, especially in India feeling secure. As privacy stays a hot topic, this campaign puts WhatsApp front and center for safe messaging, though some data concerns still linger.
