WhatsApp Testing Instagram-Like Music Feature for Status Updates

By Media Infotainment Team | Tuesday, 21 January 2025

WhatsApp is testing a music feature for status updates, inspired by Instagram. Meta-owned WhatsApp continues testing interactive features for its Android users. The platform recently released minor upgrades such as double-tap reactions, selfie stickers, and shareable sticker packs. This time, though, the company is testing an Instagram-inspired feature that lets users attach music to their status update.

This feature will allow WhatsApp users to personalize their status updates in a manner similar to how they do on Instagram. Read on to learn more about this exciting new feature and when it's expected to be available for Android users.

WhatsApp to add music to status updates

WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is finally introducing the "Music for Status Updates" feature. This was reportedly in development, but now, the feature is available for testing within the beta version for Android users. Using the WhatsApp beta update version 2.25.2.5, the testers will have a preview of how the feature works before its public availability. It will introduce a music button in the Status update section of the drawing editor to allow users to browse and select songs, so that their status updates seem more engaging and expressive, as according to the report.

WhatsApp is going to have a music library just like Instagram. This library would help in making users discover, finding different genres, artists, and trending tracks. Users will be able to add a specific part of a song to their story. For photo-based stories, music up to 15 seconds can be added, while for video stories, the duration of the music will be as long as the video. Once the status is updated, contacts will see which song has been added, just like the feature on Instagram.

Currently, the Music for status updates feature of WhatsApp is being tested and is available to only a few users in the stable version. The beta update for iOS version 25.1.10.73 also includes a similar feature, meaning it is also set to be rolled out for iPhone users.
