Elon Musk’s Tesla is finally rolling into the country with its first-ever showroom, or “experience centre,” opening in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on July 15.

This is a big moment for the electric vehicle (EV) giant as it steps into India, the world’s third-largest auto market, after years of planning and talks with the government.

The showroom, a sleek 4,003-square-foot space in the fancy Maker Maxity building near Apple’s flagship store, will give Indian customers a chance to check out Tesla’s cutting-edge electric cars up close. Word is, the Model Y will be the star of the show.

According to reports, Tesla has brought in five Model Y vehicles from its Shanghai factory, each worth about ₹2.77 million ($31,988).

India’s 70% import tax on fully built cars will likely make these EVs pricier for buyers. To support its operations, Tesla has also leased a 24,500-square-foot service centre in Kurla West and is hiring for over 40 roles, including a store manager in Mumbai, showing they’re serious about setting up shop.

This launch comes after years of back-and-forth between Tesla and the Indian government. Elon Musk even met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as recently as February 2025 to iron out details. High import taxes were a sticking point, but India’s recent decision to lower tariffs to 15% for Electric Vehicle's priced over $35,000 helped pave the way. Still, Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said last month that Tesla isn’t planning to manufacture in India just yet, focusing instead on selling imported vehicles.

Industry insiders believe this Mumbai showroom is Tesla’s way of testing the waters, with plans possibly in the works for another location in New Delhi’s Aerocity later this year. Deliveries could start as soon as August, bringing Tesla’s high-tech features like Autopilot to Indian roads. This move not only expands Tesla’s global reach but also taps into India’s growing love for EVs, even with challenges like taxes and regulations.
