STR 49 Officially Titled Arasan: First Look Revealed
Tamil cinema fans are buzzing with excitement as producer Kalaipuli S Thanu has officially announced that Silambarasan’s 49th film, previously known as STR 49, is titled Arasan.
Directed by the celebrated Vetri Maaran, this movie dives back into the gritty, intense world of Vada Chennai.
Alongside the title reveal, the team dropped a striking first-look poster that’s got everyone talking.
The poster shows Silambarasan looking fierce, covered in blood, holding a machete, and leaning on a beat-up bicycle.
His shadowy expression hints at a tough, street-smart character, much like the vibe from a teaser released earlier this month. It’s clear Arasan will deliver the raw, hard-hitting storytelling Vetri Maaran is known for, reminiscent of his 2018 hit Vada Chennai.

Vetri Maaran shared that Arasan is based on the original script he wrote for Vada Chennai, which was initially meant for Silambarasan before it was reworked for Dhanush’s character, Anbu. While the film is set in the same rough-and-tumble North Chennai world of gangs and loyalty, it’s a standalone story—don’t expect a Dhanush cameo. The focus is on new characters and fresh conflicts, packed with the intense drama and action Vetri Maaran fans love.
Produced by V Creations, Arasan is being filmed at a fast pace. Though the plot is still under wraps, sources suggest it’s a gritty action-drama with plenty of raw emotion and tough choices. The crew includes familiar names like cinematographer Velraj and music composer Santhosh Narayanan, both of whom worked on Vada Chennai, ensuring the film’s dark, immersive feel.
Rumors are swirling about the cast. There’s talk of Andrea Jeremiah returning as Chandra, alongside Vada Chennai actors Samuthirakani and Kishore. Newcomers like Manikandan and even director Nelson Dilipkumar might join, but nothing’s confirmed yet. This mix of talent promises a story full of complex, memorable characters.
For Silambarasan, Arasan is another big step in his comeback. After shining in Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, he’s balancing multiple projects. His 50th film, STR 50, directed by Desingh Periyasamy, sees him taking on a producer role, while STR 51 with Ashwath Marimuthu has him playing the mysterious “God of Love.” That project hit a small bump when the director addressed some rumors, saying, “My bad, I caused the confusion.”
