Sinners Break Record with 16 Oscar Nominations
At the 98th Academy Award nominations announcement, Sinners earned 16 nominations, setting a new record for the most nominations ever in Oscar history.
The film surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations held by Titanic, La La Land, and All About Eve. It made history in the race for the Academy Awards’ biggest honors.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners features a supernatural storyline set in the Jim Crow South, blending blues music with a vampire mythos.
The film received nods for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, and recognition in several supporting and technical categories.
The nominations highlighted not just the performances but also its craftsmanship, including achievements in cinematography and costume design.

The 2026 nominations reflected diversity with films from Brazil, Norway, and other international locations represented. The slate demonstrated excellence across mainstream and global cinema.
Legendary costume designer Ruth E. Carter made history with her fifth nomination for Sinners, becoming the most nominated Black woman in Oscar history.
