Mirzapur: The Movie Heads to Theatres After Fan Demand

Mirzapur has returned after two years, with Mirzapur: The Movie, which has taken the popular crime drama to the big screens from OTT platforms. This theatrical act has created a lot of hype among the fans of the franchise, which debuted in 2018, of Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Tripathi.

During the Mirzapur trailer launch at Mumbai, the producer Farhan Akhtar has shared with the fans the reason he had to change the next chapter into a film and not continue it as a second season. Akhtar says the move was mostly due to the fans of the franchise who were always asking for its return.

Farhan Akhtar Says Fans Drove the Movie Decision

Farhan Akhtar said that one of the reasons that the show got so popular and has a huge following is that it inspired the producers to take Mirzapur to the silver screen. He said fans were asking the franchise to return from various spots over and over and eventually the demand for a theatrical release was generated.

Farhan Akhtar thanked the audience for the ongoing support and said that the cast of the film was excited to reunite with the original cast members, and bring in new ones as well. The theatrical format will help the creators to bring the universe of Mirzapur to a larger extent, while maintaining the aspects that made the show popular.

From an Unusual Pitch to a Major Franchise

Farhan Akhtar also remembered how writer Puneet Krishna first presented to him the concept of Mirzapur later. The initial idea was an unconventional one that the team had to ponder if it would work or not before developing it as a series, he said.

It was over the years that Mirzapur developed into one of the most popular streaming series in India, developing its characters, intense rivalries and crime-driven storyline. The end of the series itself paved the way for the makers to expand the story beyond OTT platforms.

Original Cast Returns for Mirzapur: The Movie

Mirzapur: The Movie has resurrected some of the most loved characters of the franchise. Ali Fazal also returns as Guddu Pandit, and Divyenndu is back as Munna Tripathi with Pankaj Tripathi back as Kaleen Bhaiya.

Also returning are Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Abhishek Banerjee. Jitendra Kumar and Ravi Kishan are also on board, adding to the cast for the franchise's cinematic version.

The film will be based on the struggle for the Mirzapur throne but will be bigger, with fresh sets, storylines, obstacles and of course, some familiar rivalries.
