India will kick start its campaign for the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a 124-strong team at the Glasgow Games from July 23 till August 2, in eight able and five para sports. The Indian team has several Olympic and world champions in its squad who will be looking to give their team an edge in the Commonwealth Games.
The opening ceremony of the Games, which will be held on July 23, will be followed by Indian athletes taking part in various disciplines from the first day of the competition. Athletics, boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, para sports, cycling, swimming and judo are expected to have high hopes for the medal contenders, with several events to be contested in the 11-day competition. The full event schedule has also been announced in Indian Standard Time (IST) which will allow fans to track India's performance during the entire tournament.
Leading this challenge are Olympic swagatiya, international sports persons such as Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain, with a pack of veteran campaigners and new ones. India Eyes Strong Medal Haul Across Key Disciplines
This Commonwealth Games will host a pared-down programme of 10 sports, fewer than in previous Games, in a revamped format agreed to by the Games organisers. Even though the sports have been reduced, India's hopes of winning medals in sports they have been good at in the past are still high. The Games will also feature the biggest para-sport programme in the Commonwealth Games' history.
The Indian athletes will be participating in different sessions, with medal events taking place during the competition. The action from track and field, the combat sports, swimming, the cycling and the lawn bowls will keep fans busy as will be the closing stages when there will be a number of big Indian medal hopefuls.
India will be looking to continue their strong form from past Commonwealth Games, with the aim of being one of the top contenders for the medals table in Glasgow. Former sports administrators and athletes have been hopeful for India's prospects and believe the team can then make it to about 30 medals, despite the fewer events.
Having the full programme now is a great opportunity for Indian sports lovers to get ready to cheer on the Indian athletes as they compete for medals and spectacular shows on one of the world's largest sporting events. With Indian athletes aiming to write yet another glorious page in the country's Commonwealth Games history, the Games are set to be a whirl of action for almost two weeks.
