Cristiano Ronaldo Set to Play in India for Historic Asian Clash
A moment of truth arrives in Indian football, given that Cristiano Ronaldo and Saudi Arabia Al Nassr will take on FC Goa in the Asian Champions League Two in September. Defined in Group D together with Istiklol of Tajikistan and Al-Zawraa of Iraq, the match is being labeled as one of the most historic ones in Indian club football history, and this has caught everyone in the sporting world in a state of elation.
“This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment for FC Goa,” club CEO Ravi Puskur told The Associated Press. “To host Al Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the biggest game in Indian club football history.”
Al Nassr is currently placed third in the Saudi Pro League the previous season and is coming to play in India with a complete complement of international players such as former Liverpool winger Sadio Mane and Portuguese forward Joao Felix. Ronaldo has played in the club since 2022 and has not won any major trophy yet; he would be keen to earn a name in Asia second-tier championship.
“For Indian football, this is historic,” Puskur said. “We are here on merit, and a match like this gives us the chance to show that we can compete on the continental stage, becoming part of the sport's biggest narratives.”

Also, the match is at a time when Indian football is facing a battle of its own. The 2025 26 season of the ISL has been postponed because of uncertainty in signing an organizing contract between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Ltd., pending a court order by the Supreme Court. Such clubs as Bengaluru FC, Odisha FC, and Chennaiyin FC have even stopped paying salaries or discontinued operations.
“While the financial boost is important, the bigger picture is the opportunity this creates for long-term growth,” said Puskur. “The global attention, sponsorship interest, and fan engagement from a moment like this help strengthen the club's foundations, allowing us to invest in the future.”
