James Gunn Revamps DC in Peacemaker S2, Swaps Justice League for Justice Gang
James Gunn is making big changes to the DC Universe (DCU) in Peacemaker Season 2, which hit HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
The show, led by John Cena as the over-the-top vigilante Chris Smith, aka Peacemaker, has officially moved on from Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Instead, it introduces a new team called the Justice Gang, tying the series to Gunn’s rebooted DCU after his Superman movie.
In the first season of Peacemaker, a spin-off from The Suicide Squad (2021), we saw quick appearances by Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash, hinting at the Justice League showing up late after Peacemaker stopped an alien invasion.
But Season 2’s “Previously in the DCU” recap replaces that moment with the Justice Gang, featuring Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner (Green Lantern), Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and shadowy versions of David Corenswet’s Superman and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl.

This change marks the end of the old DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and aligns Peacemaker with the new DCU, set just a month after Superman.
Gunn, who runs DC Studios with Peter Safran, told Phase Hero that the Justice League cameo in Season 1 didn’t fit the new DCU’s direction. “I knew we had to fix that,” he said, pointing out that Season 1 already had quirks like mentions of Green Arrow and Bat-Mite, which didn’t quite match the old DCEU. To make the switch, Gunn used existing footage and minimal new shots for the recap, avoiding expensive reshoots or complicated multiverse plotlines.

The Justice Gang’s debut connects Peacemaker to Gunn’s Superman reboot, with new episodes dropping every Friday on JioHotstar until October 9. Fans are buzzing about a big cameo coming later this season, setting the stage for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026. While some love the smooth transition, others feel it brushes off the DCEU’s history too quickly.
