HBO has shared the first glimpse of Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid in its new Harry Potter television series, and fans have already begun to speculate and debate regarding Frost as Hagrid.

The photo, taken in the Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, UK, where filming commenced on July 14, 2025, depicts Frost as the iconic half-giant, Hogwarts groundskeeper, with the green eyes, long, curly brown hair and bushy beard that the Hagrid is so identifiable with. The caption of the photo says, Everyone ready! Here we go! Nick Frost appeared in his debut big boots of Hagrid in his first day.”

Frost, who appeared in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, replaces the late Robbie Coltrane, who originated the famous role in the first eight Harry Potters. The comedian has also stated that he intends to do justice to the legacy of Coltrane but to make his own mark of Hagrid by talking of the character as a lovely, lost violent, funny warm child. He mentioned that the format of the series, so each season corresponds to one of the books of J.K. Rowling, gives more opportunities to explore the character of Hagrid.

The show, featuring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Snape, will star in the series and be represented as a literal adaptation of Rowling novels and will be released in 2027. The nostalgic feeling is given by filming at the same place as original films at Leavesden.

There is mixed fan reaction to Frost as Hagrid. His casting is admired by some and one fan wrote, “He looks AMAZING!” Others revile the costume, comparing it to a cosplay, saying that the make-up and wig needs re-designing. As production continues, HBO’s Harry Potter series promises to rekindle the magic of the Wizarding World, with Frost’s Hagrid at the heart of this new chapter.
