Growing Concern over News Stories Generated by AI: Survey

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in news creation has raised concerns throughout the world, according to a new analysis from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. This makes it harder for news organizations to engage their readers.

By summarizing news using emerging AI techniques from firms like Google and OpenAI, newsrooms may be able to distract readers from traditional news websites. Nonetheless, the study shows that a lot of individuals, particularly when it comes to significant subjects like politics, do not believe news produced by AI.

According to the poll, 52% of respondents in the US and 63% of respondents in the UK said they were uncomfortable with news generated by AI and would rather have it support journalists in the background. Nearly 100,000 respondents from 47 nations participated in the poll, which revealed a general mistrust of AI in journalism.

According to Nic Newman of the Reuters Institute, 59 percent of respondents expressed concern about false material they saw online, raising questions about the validity of content produced by AI. South Africa and the US are especially concerned about this, probably because of impending elections.

Getting consumers to pay for news is another challenge faced by news companies. In 20 nations, just 17% of individuals pay for internet news, a percentage that has remained constant for the past three years despite some rise during the epidemic. Due to trials or promotions, many people in the US pay discounted prices; 46% of consumers pay less than the full amount. The study also demonstrates the growing prominence of some news personalities on websites such as TikTok. Of the 5,600+ people questioned on TikTok, 57% said they preferred to follow individual celebrities rather than traditional news brands.
