Dhanush Criticizes AI-Altered Raanjhanaa Re-Release
Actor Dhanush is speaking out against an AI-altered version of his 2013 hit movie Raanjhanaa that was re-released without his permission.
The Tamil version, Ambikapathy, came back to theaters on August 1, 2025, with a new “happy ending” made using artificial intelligence. In this version, Dhanush’s character, Kundan, lives, unlike the original where he tragically dies. Neither Dhanush nor director Aanand L. Rai were asked about this change, and it’s stirred up a lot of debate in the film world.
Dhanush took to X to share his feelings, saying, “The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection. This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago.”
He also pointed out a bigger issue, adding, “The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists.” His words show how much he cares about keeping films true to their original vision.

Aanand L. Rai, the film’s director, agrees, calling the AI edit a “huge betrayal” and saying he had no idea it was happening. Raanjhanaa, loved for its heartfelt story and starring Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, and Abhay Deol, relies on Kundan’s death for its emotional punch. The new AI ending, where Kundan wakes up in a hospital, has fans split—some enjoy the happier twist, but others, along with filmmakers like Neeraj Pandey and Kabir Khan, say it’s not right to change a movie without the creators’ approval.

Eros Media World, the film’s producer, says they had the legal right to use AI for a “creative update.” But the strong reaction from fans and the industry shows people are worried about AI changing art without permission. This has sparked calls for new rules to keep films authentic and respect the artists’ work.
