Bobby Whitlock, Iconic Keyboardist and Songwriter, Dies at 77

Bobby Whitlock, the well-loved keyboardist, singer, and co-founder of the legendary blues-rock band Derek and the Dominos, passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at 77 following a brief struggle with cancer according to his manager Carol Kaye.

Whitlock was a cornerstone of rock history through his music and notably his work on the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs recorded in 1970.

Whitlock was born in Tennessee, Memphis and brought up in a musical world. He started playing as a teenager at Stax Records, jammings with legends such as Booker T. and the MG, and Sam & Dave.

He was the first white performer to sign with Stax at the age of 16. His major breakthrough was when he was with Delaney & Bonnie and Friends and he met Eric Clapton.

This friendship resulted in creating Derek and the Dominos in 1970 with Clapton, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon and finally Duane Allman. Whitlock was a co-writer on Layla, contributing seven tracks to the album including the near-hits Bottom Blues and Tell the Truth which have remained timeless with fans all these years.

Beyond the Dominos, Whitlock’s talent shone on records like George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street, and albums by Dr. John and Stephen Stills. His soulful voice and keyboard skills often went uncredited but left a lasting mark. After the Dominos split in 1971, Whitlock went solo and later performed heartfelt acoustic shows with his wife, CoCo Carmel.

In 2024, Whitlock’s hometown honored him with a spot on Memphis’ Beale Street Walk of Fame for his musical contributions. He was also a talented painter, with his art showcased in galleries. “I’ve been blessed in every way,” Whitlock once said, reflecting on his life.

He leaves behind his wife, CoCo Carmel Whitlock, children Ashley Brown, Beau Whitlock, and Tim Whitlock Kelly, and sister Debbie Wade. With his passing, Eric Clapton remains the last living member of Derek and the Dominos’ core lineup. Whitlock’s music and spirit will live on in the hearts of fans worldwide.
