Veteran Actress B. Saroja Devi Passes Away at 87

Indian film industry is in shock as one of the oldest actresses, B. Saroja Devi, died at 87 because of age-related ailments at her Malleswaram home in Bengaluru on Monday morning.

Saroja Devi was also a pioneer of Indian cinemas and her place in the history of Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films remains unbeaten as she is known as the Goddess of expression, Abhinaya Saraswathi, in industry circles and Kannada Parrot, Kannadathu Paingili, in people history.

Born on January 7, 1938, Saroja Devi started her glorious film career at the age of 17 having appeared in the Kannada film, Mahakavi Kalidasa (1955), which won a National Film Award.

She gained recognition through the 1958 Tamil blockbuster Nadodi Mannan, opposite M.G. Ramachandran and became a pan-Indian star.

She appeared in more than 200 films during the course of more than 70 years and became famous as a graceful and versatile actress with a charismatic screen presence. Her remarkable works were 26 successful movies with M.G. Ramachandran and appearances with legendary names such as Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan and N.T. Rama Rao.

Saroja Devi was not only an actress. She was vice-president of Kannada Chalanchitra Sangha and even presided the 45th and 53rd National Film Awards juries. She was a cultural icon having attained Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Kalaimamani Award.

The death of Saroja Devi puts an end to the golden days of Indian cinema. Her roles in the classics such as Kittur Chennamma and Babruvahana will prove to be inspirational to the generations. She leaves behind the family and millions of her admirers across the globe.
