Top Canadian News Outlets File Lawsuit Against OpenAI
Five major Canadian news media companies initiated legal action against OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, accusing it of consistently violating copyright and online terms of use.
This action is the latest in a series of challenges for OpenAI, which counts Microsoft as its primary backer.
In a statement, Torstar, Postmedia, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press, and CBC/Radio-Canada accused OpenAI of scraping substantial amounts of content from media outlets to develop its products, without obtaining permission or compensating the content owners.
“Journalism is in the public interest. OpenAI using other companies’ journalism for their own commercial gain is not. It’s illegal,” it said.
Earlier this month, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk broadened his lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing Microsoft and OpenAI of illegally attempting to monopolize the generative artificial intelligence market and push out competitors.
