Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has created box-office history by becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, with its worldwide collection reaching $1.352 billion. The film has surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine, which previously held the record with $1.338 billion.

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, The Odyssey is Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. The film also features Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya and Lupita Nyong’o in key roles. It was released globally on July 17, 2026, and has continued to attract audiences during its theatrical run.

The film’s current worldwide total includes around $516 million from North America and more than $835 million from international markets, according to reported box office collections. Its strong performance in international markets has helped it overtake the Marvel film’s previous record.

Nolan Scores Another Major Box-Office Milestone

The record also bolsters Nolan as one of Hollywood's most commercially successful filmmakers. The Odyssey had already achieved $1 billion worldwide earlier this month, and become Nolan's biggest film, beating The Dark Knight Rises.

The movie's success is even more remarkable in light of its R rating, that limits it to older audiences in some markets. The rating in the U.S. was for violence and strong language and mature themes. The movie has enjoyed high demand abroad and has been shown in high-definition format.

With The Odyssey still playing in theatres, its final worldwide tally could rise further. The film has now added another major achievement to Nolan’s career while taking the R-rated box-office crown from Deadpool & Wolverine.
