The New Chairman of BBC says 'Fight is on' to make Public Service Broadcasting Future Proof
Dr. Shah, the new Chairman at BBC stated in his first major speech that the Public Service Broadcasting is a “Very British success story, ” wherein, he said that there will be high competition in future for broadcasting the channels across every area.
Speaking of Dr. Shah, he is an individual who brings more than 40 years of experience in the Indian-born TV and radio broadcasting industry. Currently, he is trying to launch new channels in all the areas of digital streaming, economic, socio-culture fields, leveraging his expertise in this new role in BBC.
Back in the month of March this year, Dr. Shah has been appointed as the BBC’s 26th chairman and is likely to say “No other country has anything like this”. Further, he signifies that Public Service Broadcasters lie at the heart of their social and cultural life, and they are worth fighting for.
Shah, at the age of 72 has suggested three key steps to the government and Ofcom to safeguard Public Service Broadcasters (PSBs).
The above steps will be essential to drive greater agility, flexibility and pace so as to aid PSBs reinvent themselves and become future ready, it is a heads-up for streaming companies such as Netflix and to reinforce the Media Act.
Shah further noted, “British public service broadcasters have, over the years, created something quite wonderful. We should work together as a sector to future-proof this precious asset and put it at the heart of the growth strategy that is key to the future prosperity of this country. So, I will work with my fellow public service broadcasters to press our legislators and regulators to take action on these fronts. To invert the cliche, let us act fast, so that we don’t repent at leisure.”
As Introduced this year, the Media Act gave Channel 4 the much needed ability to produce and monetise more of its own programming. Prior, it had to commission independent production companies to make its shows as it is a not-for-profit public corporation that depends on advertising revenue for profitability.
