Suriya's Retro Kicks Off with Strong Advance Bookings in Tamil Nadu
Fans of Tamil cinema are buzzing with excitement as Suriya’s latest film, Retro, a romantic action flick directed by Karthik Subbaraj, is off to a stellar start. Advance ticket sales for its May 1 opening day have already crossed Rs. 3 crores in Tamil Nadu alone, with over 100,000 tickets sold on Book My Show. Industry experts believe Retro could be Suriya’s biggest opening yet if it wins over audiences after release.
Even after the bad response to Suriya’s last film, Kanguva, Retro has built impressive hype, especially in Tamil Nadu. Social media posts on X reveal that nationwide advance bookings are nearing Rs. 5 crores, with Tamil Nadu contributing a hefty Rs. 4.05 crores. The film’s eye-catching trailers and Subbaraj’s knack for stylish storytelling have fans eagerly counting down the days. Produced by Suriya and Jyotika’s 2D Entertainment, Retro also features a lively soundtrack by Santosh Narayanan, which has only added to the excitement.
However, Retro isn’t without competition. It’s set to go head-to-head with Nani’s HIT 3 in Telugu markets, where theater availability is already sparking debates. While Tamil Nadu remains Suriya’s stronghold, the film’s performance in Telugu states will be key to its overall success. Observers say Retro will need to stand out to capture audiences in these regions, especially with HIT 3 also seeing strong pre-sales.
Starring Pooja Hegde alongside Suriya, Retro promises a mix of romance and high-energy action that’s likely to click with fans. Tamil Nadu’s box office has been on fire lately, films like Good Bad Ugly raked in Rs. 172 crores in just two weeks, setting the stage for Retro to shine.
With its release just days away, fans are eagerly awaiting Retro’s debut, hoping it delivers the blockbuster experience they’re craving. If early buzz is any indication, Suriya could be in for a major comeback.
