Some Trump Supporters Attribute the Attempted Assassination to the Media
Following a botched assassination attempt on Saturday night, some of Donald Trump's followers turned toward the press pen and hurled derogatory remarks at them, accusing them of being responsible for the incident.
One participant exclaimed angrily, "This is your fault!" as he walked up to the fence line between the journalists from the audience. "You are to blame for this!" "You are to blame!" shouted someone else.
Axios reporter Sophia Cai also stated that a few rally attendees attempted to break through the barricades forming the press pen, but that they were prevented by security staff. Cai described several in the crowd warning the journalists, saying, "You're next" and that their "time is coming."
Following the horrifying attempt on Trump's life that left one rally attendee dead and two others critically injured, the news media has become a lightning rod for some Trump fans to point the finger at one another.
Some of the former president's fans in MAGA Media fiercely attacked the Trump campaign as it encouraged its personnel to "condemn all forms of violence" and said that it "will not tolerate dangerous rhetoric on social media."
While the Trump campaign declared that it "will not tolerate dangerous rhetoric on social media" and urged its employees to "condemn all forms of violence," some of the former president's supporters in MAGA Media fiercely criticized the press for its tough reporting on Trump, which raised concerns about what four more years of the former president's administration might entail.
News outlets have extensively covered Trump's intentions to use the federal government for his own advantage, including exacting revenge on his political rivals, throughout the campaign season, among other things. The reportage is currently under investigation; some Trump fans point the finger at it for creating a tense environment that led to the attempted murder, while most ignore the former president's inflammatory remarks.
Leading leaders in the news media denounced the shooting as soon as it happened, highlighting the fact that violence against a political candidate is an attack on democracy in general. Prominent liberal pundits were vehemently disgusted as well. The nation's most well-known liberal celebrity, Rachel Maddow of MSNBC, expressed her revulsion and horror by saying she lacked the words to express her feelings.
Maddow posted on Threads, "There is no *no* *no* *no* violent solution to any American political conflict." "While I'm relieved that the former president will be alright, I'm also heartbroken and furious about the other individuals who were harmed or killed. It's a rather gloomy day".
The way the media and left media celebrities responded to assaults on Democrats was very different from how right-wing media personalities handled the same situation. Unlike prominent conservatives who have heightened the volume or stoked the embers of false flag conspiracy theories following assaults on Paul Pelosi and Gabrielle Giffords, they urged for calm.
Still, there's no denying that there is a greater anti-press sentiment among MAGA circles. Supporters of the former president have sought to demonize and accuse journalists for the horrific crime, driving anti-media sentiment to dangerous heights despite the truthfulness of the mainstream media's coverage of Trump.
Conservative radio commentator Erick Erickson wrote on X, "Every day, MSNBC tells its audience that Trump is a threat to democracy, an authoritarian in waiting, and a would-be dictator if no one stops him." "What were their expectations?"
In response to recent coverage of his father, Donald Trump Jr. attacked CNN, The Washington Post, and the media in general. He said on X, "Dems and their media buddies knew exactly what they were doing with the 'literally Hitler' bullshit!"
The heightened sentiment toward the press, coupled with the fact that the Republican National Convention begins on Monday, has news executives worried and sparked conversations about safety and security measures within newsrooms with just over 100 days until the November elections. Thousands of Trump fans and several media will be present at the four-day event, which was already a security risk before the attempted murder.
One news executive told me, "Journalists are always among the very first to run towards a crisis, and we collectively are working in overdrive to keep everyone safe." "That is the highest priority of all."
