Shreyasi Joins Indian Squad Following ISSF Sanction for Quota Exchange
Shreyasi Singh, an experienced trap shooter, was named to India's final 21-member shooting team for the Paris Olympics on Friday after a quota swap that required the consent of the sport's world governing body, ISSF.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) made the statement after the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) approved the NRAI's request for a quota exchange.
Because Manu Bhaker won both air pistol and sports pistol, one of the quota spots was switched for a female trap shooter, resulting in Shreyasi's membership on the squad.
The 32-year-old, who is also an active BJP lawmaker representing the Jamui constituency in the Bihar Assembly, will compete in the women's trap event with Rajeshwari Kumari.
"We had requested the ISSF to change one quota place from 10m air pistol women to trap women and have received correspondence from them that it has been accepted," said Kr. Sultan Singh, the NRAI's secretary general.
"As a result, Shreyasi Singh has now been added to the original list of 20 names published and we will have a full quota of two starts in the women's trap event," he announced.
The squad presently has eight members in rifle, seven in pistol, and six in shotgun.
Including the mixed events, the squad will make 28 starts at the quadrennial sports spectacle, which will take place in the French city from July 26 to August 11.
The last time Indian shooters won Olympic medals was in the 2012 London Games, where Vijay Kumar (silver) and Gagan Narang (bronze) landed on the podium. This came after Abhinav Bindra's spectacular gold medal attempt at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
