Paris Olympics 2024: Why the Google Logo Was Replaced with a Skateboarding Doodle
Google Doodle curators have replaced the search engine's logo with an animated piece of art inspired by the Paris Olympics 2024 for the second day in a row. The interactive Google Doodle for Saturday, July 27, honors the sport of skateboarding, which debuted at the Tokyo Olympics, and it is themed after the opening ceremony.
For those who are unaware, a Google Doodle is a brief alteration of the website's logo in observance of a noteworthy accomplishment, historical event, occasion, or figurehead.
More than 5,000 doodles have been curated since Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin used them as an out-of-office message during the 1998 Burning Man Festival.
Today's doodle shows birds supporting a bird athlete as they execute stunts at a skate park.
The Olympic Games recently included this sport. This year's Summer Games include two skateboarding competitions:
Street: This event replicates an urban setting with railings, benches, and stairs as obstacles. Skateboarders are evaluated on their trick execution, difficulty, and originality.
Park: There are several ramps and bends in this concrete park, which is formed like a bowl. Performances of athletes are assessed based on their overall performance, diversity of techniques, and fluidity.
"After making its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021, skateboarding will once again be on the program for Paris 2024, taking place at the famous Place de La Concorde in the heart of the French capital," according to the Games' official website.
The website states that there will be two rounds to the skateboarding competition: preliminary and finals. This year, 88 skateboarders are participating. Men and women in the Street and Park disciplines are included in this.
The newest sports to be included in the Olympics are breakdancing, surfing, and sport climbing, in addition to skateboarding. At the Paris Olympics, almost 10,500 participants will compete in 32 different sports.
