Mohanlal's Thudarum Smashes Rs 200 Crore Mark, Becomes Third Malayalam Film to Hit Milestone
Mohanlal’s latest hit, Thudarum, directed by Tharun Moorthy, has stormed past Rs 200 crore at the worldwide box office in just 17 days since hitting theaters on April 25, 2025. This massive success makes it the third Malayalam film to join the exclusive Rs 200 crore club, trailing only Manjummel Boys and L2: Empuraan. Plus, it’s now the biggest Malayalam movie ever in Kerala, beating out 2018: Everyone Is a Hero.
Thudarum is a gripping revenge drama where Mohanlal plays Shanmugham, a taxi driver caught in a messy world of corruption and personal tragedy. Fans are thrilled to see Mohanlal reunite with Shobana after 15 years, and their chemistry adds a heartfelt touch to the story. Written by Moorthy and K.R. Sunil, the movie’s realistic rural backdrop, stunning visuals, and Mohanlal’s raw, emotional performance have won over critics and audiences alike.
The film’s box office numbers are jaw-dropping. It’s pulled in Rs 115 crore in India and about Rs 90 crore (USD 10.6 million) from overseas markets, even outshining Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava to become 2025’s second-biggest overseas grosser. In Kerala alone, it’s close to hitting Rs 100 crore, a first for any Malayalam film in one state. With barely any hype before release, its success is all thanks to word-of-mouth buzz, proving Mohanlal’s star power and Malayalam cinema’s growing global pull.
Mohanlal shared his joy online, posting,“Some journeys don’t need noise, just hearts to carry them forward. Thudarum has found its place in millions of hearts, breaking all box office records in Kerala. Gratitude for all the love.” Fans are over the moon, with one saying, Mohanlal’s the only Indian star with two 200-crore films, and they’re just 30 days apart.
As Thudarum keeps packing theaters, it’s on track to rival L2: Empuraan’s domestic totals, showing that Mohanlal and Malayalam cinema are unstoppable right now.
