Lionel Messi delivered a moment of brilliance to lead Inter Miami to a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against FC Porto in the FIFA Club World Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, marking the first competitive win for an MLS side over European opposition. The Argentine superstar’s stunning free-kick in the 54th minute sealed the historic triumph, boosting Inter Miami’s chances of advancing from Group A.
Porto took the lead early when Samu Aghehowa scored from a penalty in the eighth minute after Noah Allen fouled João Mário, confirmed by VAR. Porto controlled the first half, with Francesco Moura nearly scoring and Alan Varela hitting the post. Despite Messi setting up a chance for Luis Suárez, Porto’s goalkeeper Claudio Ramos stood tall, keeping Inter Miami scoreless before the break.
The second half saw Inter Miami come alive. Just two minutes after halftime, Telasco Segovia leveled the score with a strong shot off a cross from Marcelo Weigandt, firing up the crowd. Then, Messi drew a foul just outside the box from Rodrigo Mora. With fans chanting his name, he curled a perfect left-footed free-kick over the wall and into the top corner, leaving Ramos with no chance. It was Messi’s 50th goal in 61 games for Inter Miami, proving he’s still a game-changer at 37.
Porto fought hard for a tying goal, but Inter Miami’s defense, led by goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and a late appearance from Jordi Alba, stood firm. The win puts Inter Miami level with Palmeiras at four points in Group A, after Palmeiras beat Al Ahly 2-0. Porto and Al Ahly each have one point.
