McDonald’s has settled a major 10 billion USD lawsuit brought by Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios Network and The Weather Group, avoiding a trial set for July 15 in Los Angeles federal court. The lawsuit accused McDonald’s of racial discrimination, claiming the fast-food giant unfairly limited advertising deals with Black-owned media companies like Allen’s, alleging “racial stereotyping” kept them from accessing a fair share of its advertising budget.

The settlement, announced Friday, is confidential but includes McDonald’s agreeing to buy ads from Allen’s media outlets. Allen praised the company’s commitment to supporting diverse media, suggesting the deal is a positive step forward. The agreement ends a heated legal fight that put a spotlight on racial fairness in how big companies spend their advertising dollars.

The lawsuit, filed in 2021, argued McDonald’s spent only a tiny portion of its massive advertising budget on Black-owned media, even though Black customers make up a big part of its business. Allen, a well-known Black businessman who owns The Weather Channel, said this violated federal civil rights laws. The case got a lot of attention, with people on X sharing strong opinions about the claims of racial bias.

McDonald’s, one of the world’s biggest fast-food chains, has been under pressure to improve its diversity efforts. The company said it’s dedicated to working with diverse media and building inclusive partnerships, though it didn’t share the settlement’s financial details. Experts think this deal could push other big companies to rethink how they support minority-owned businesses.

This comes at a tough time for McDonald’s, with Morgan Stanley recently lowering its stock rating due to weaker sales. Still, the company is making moves like adding popular CosMc’s flavors to its main menu. Settling this lawsuit might let McDonald’s focus on its business while showing it’s listening to calls for fairer practices.
