Liverpool and Arsenal Battle for Barcelona Star Frenkie de Jong
According to recent reports Premier League team Arsenal are preparing to invest a 65 million EUR transfer offer for Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer.
The Dutch wonder arrived at Catalan Kings in 2019. He has successfully established himself in the midfield department. Barcelona might transfer De Jong due to both financial limitations and his contract expiration although the deal is set to expire soon.
Many leading European football clubs have shown interest in signing De Jong because he could become available. The Reds intend to buy De Jong because they need him to complete their midfield structure. The club is currently evaluating the suitability of releasing him to generate money from his transfer. De Jong's desire to stay at Barcelona has been overshadowed by Barcelona's financial challenges combined with recent managerial changes which bring doubt to his team's future.
Liverpool has also entered as a competitor with Arsenal to acquire de Jong while De Jong previously had reported interest from Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
The Barcelona management has consistently considered de Jong as an essential player but the team now consider Pedri, Gavi and Marc Casado as their starting midfielders. Hansi Flick has selected De Jong only four times for starting positions in La Liga matches this season while the coach considers different possibilities.
The high wages Barça pays De Jong present difficulties in acquiring him but he remains 27 years young. Reports indicate significant Premier League clubs show interest in bringing him to the English top-flight. All major English clubs including Chelsea and Manchester City and United have received official updates about de Jong's situation ahead of a potential summer transfer.
“When I signed for Barcelona, I didn’t imagine I’d have just one La Liga, one Copa del Rey and one Supercopa de España after four years. I expected at least double that, so it’s disappointing,” De Jong had told earlier this year.
