Lay's Adds a South Indian Twist With Its Latest Fiery Chilli Flavour

Lay’s has added a South Indian touch to its latest snack with the launch of Lay’s Hot Chips Style Asian Fiery Chilli.

The new flavour is aimed at consumers in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where spicy food and chilli-based flavours are a familiar part of everyday meals.

The new South Indian snack is being positioned as an accompaniment to popular dishes such as curd rice, rasam rice and lemon rice.

The product combines a crisp texture with a strong chilli flavour and uses marination technology to spread the seasoning across the chips, giving consumers a more intense taste with every bite.

Lay’s Builds on South India’s Spicy Food Culture

The launch is part of Lay’s effort to develop regional flavours that reflect local food preferences. Instead of presenting the product simply as another spicy chip, the brand has connected it with familiar South Indian meals and eating habits, giving the new variant a more local identity.

Regional tastes are becoming increasingly important for snack brands as consumers look for products that fit their local food preferences. For Lay’s, the new variant offers a way to bring a familiar packaged snack into a different food setting while retaining the brand identity that consumers already know.

Aastha Bhasin, Marketing Director – Potato Chips Category, PepsiCo India, said the company is paying close attention to consumer preferences as tastes continue to change. She added that the new variant was developed specifically for South India and draws inspiration from the region’s preference for fiery flavours.

The company is presenting the launch as a celebration of Indian food culture, while also keeping the familiar taste and quality associated with Lay’s. The idea is to offer consumers something that feels locally relevant without moving too far away from the product experience they expect from the brand.

New Campaign Brings the Product to Family Meals

To support the launch, Lay’s has introduced a 360-degree campaign across television, digital, social media, outdoor, print and in-store promotions. Leo India developed the campaign around an everyday family meal, using a simple situation to demonstrate how the new chips can be enjoyed with familiar food.

The campaign film shows a husband eating curd rice while his wife is busy on a work call. He adds the new Lay’s chips to her next bite, giving the familiar dish an unexpected spicy twist. Her reaction, “Abbabbahh... Super!”, becomes the central moment of the advertisement.

Rather than focusing only on the heat of the fiery chilli flavour, the campaign uses a familiar household moment to show how the product can become part of an everyday meal. The light-hearted treatment also helps the brand connect the new product with common family experiences.

The campaign was developed by Leo India, with Colonial Films handling production and Nitin Menon directing the film. Rajdeepak Das, CCO of Publicis Groupe, South Asia and Chairman of Leo South Asia, and Amitesh Rao, CEO – South Asia at Leo, are among those credited on the campaign.

New Flavour Expands Lay’s Regional Product Push

Lay’s Hot Chips Style Asian Fiery Chilli is now available across South Indian states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The product comes in ₹5, ₹10 and ₹25 packs and is being sold through traditional retail outlets as well as quick-commerce platforms.

The launch adds to Lay’s focus on product innovation in the Indian snack market. By developing products around familiar local tastes, the brand is looking to make its offerings more relevant to different regions while continuing to build on its established presence.
