IPL 2027 Auction to Be Held in India After Three-Year Gap

The IPL 2027 Auction will be back in India following a three-year gap. During the IPL Governing Council meeting on September 15, the BCCI had decided to take the mini-auction back home.

The last time the IPL auction was held in India was in Kochi in 2023. Since then, the event has been taking place internationally, with subsequent editions in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. According to reports, the IPL 2027 Auction will be a mini-auction with the next mega auction potentially taking place overseas.

BCCI Considers Franchise Concerns

The move is also in response to the logistical and operational difficulties that the franchises were facing with travelling abroad for a mini-auction for IPL 2027.

Sources say the IPL Governing Council has taken into account the suggestions of the franchisees after listening to them, especially at the previous auction that took place in Abu Dhabi. After talking, the council agreed to look for an Indian city to host the next auction.

The BCCI has not yet finalised the city. The venue selection will depend largely on accommodation availability for franchise officials and delegations.

Hotel Availability to Influence Auction Venue

The BCCI is expected to require more than 100 rooms for franchise delegations for a couple of nights. As India is entering wedding season from October to December, availability of five-star hotels is likely to be one of the factors to consider when choosing the venue.

The Governing Council will thus consider the availability of accommodation before deciding on the host city for the IPL Auction.

Impact Player Rule Decision Deferred

Meanwhile, the IPL Governing Council has not taken a final decision on the future of the Impact Player rule. Another meeting is expected to be held in about a month, when the BCCI could decide whether the rule will continue.

The BCCI had sought feedback from IPL franchises on the rule. According to reports, most franchises are opposed to the provision, although some teams have suggested retaining it for another season because they built their squads with the rule in mind.

The final decision on the Impact Player rule is expected at the upcoming Governing Council meeting.
