The highly successful televised adaptation of Naughty Dog's video game The Last of Us received approval for another season by HBO. Network officials announced the third season right before Season 2 started on April 13, 2025 indicating strong audience confidence in the show and its post-apocalyptic storyline.

According to reports, Season 2 picks up five years after the first season, following Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they navigate a world wrecked by a deadly fungus. This time around, we’ll meet new faces like Kaitlyn Dever playing Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac Dixon, bringing fresh energy to the story inspired by The Last of Us Part II. The show’s creators, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, have hinted that the game’s huge storyline needs more than one season to tell, and Season 3 might be even bigger than what’s coming next.

Fans are buzzing about the renewal on X, thrilled that Joel and Ellie’s journey isn’t ending anytime soon. Season 1 was a massive hit, and early reviews for Season 2 say it’s just as intense, with Bella Ramsey stealing the show, though some say it feels like a setup for more to come. It’s clear HBO believes in the long haul for this series, and they’re not slowing down.

With Season 2 kicking off this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and streaming on Max, the announcement of Season 3 has everyone pumped. Mazin and Druckmann are keeping the story rolling, digging into the tough choices and emotional twists that made the game so unforgettable.
