His death was confirmed by his publicist, Melissa Nathan, who shared a statement from Wendt’s family: “George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend, and a confidant to all those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever.”

He was in all 275 episodes from 1982 to 1993, earning six Emmy nods for his spot-on performance as the guy everyone wanted to grab a beer with.

Wendt didn’t stop at Cheers. He showed up in films like Fletch and The Little Rascals and lent his voice to The Simpsons. On Broadway, he brought his warmth to Hairspray and played Santa in Elf, a role that matched his jolly, down-to-earth vibe.

His Cheers co-stars and fans shared their grief. Ted Danson, who played Sam, called him “a brother who lit up every room.” Rhea Perlman, who played Carla, said his laugh was contagious and their scenes together were a blast. John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff, said Wendt’s quiet humor was “pure gold.” Fans took to social media, sharing clips of Norm’s bar entrances, with one writing, “RIP George Wendt. Norm was the friend we all wished we had.”
