Ed Sheeran just released his latest single, “Sapphire,” featuring India’s beloved singer Arijit Singh, giving fans a taste of his upcoming album Play, which hits shelves on September 12, 2025. Dropped on June 5, this lively track mixes British pop with South Asian vibes, creating a joyful anthem perfect for summer.

“Sapphire” is the third single from Play, following “Old Phone” and “Azizam.” It’s a love song with a global twist, featuring South Asian drums, sitar, and Arijit Singh’s soulful backing vocals. Lines like “We are surrounded but I can only see / The lights, your face, your eyes / Exploding like fireworks in the sky”capture its romantic, universal feel. A full Punjabi version with more of Singh’s voice is coming soon.

Ed called “Sapphire” the heart of Play, saying it came together during a creative session in Goa with top Indian musicians. “Working with Arijit was like finding the final piece of the puzzle,” he said. The music video, shot across India during Ed’s recent tour, includes a fun cameo by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan and bursts with Indian culture. Directed by Liam Pethick, it’s a visual treat.

The song’s teaser blew up online, with clips of Ed singing in Hindi, getting a Punjabi tattoo, and dancing with college students. Fans on X went wild, with posts like “Ed’s totally embraced India!” flooding timelines.

Play is Ed’s first project since his Mathematics series, and it shows him exploring new sounds while keeping his knack for heartfelt lyrics.
