Delhi High Court Seeks OpenAI's Response in ANI Copyright Suit

The Delhi High Court on Monday requested a response from OpenAI to an application filed by the Indian Music Industry (IMI) to intervene in a suit brought by news agency Asian News International (ANI) over the alleged unauthorized use of its content to train and operate ChatGPT. During the hearing, Justice Amit Bansal noted that the scope of the suit could not be extended indefinitely, saying, "We can't keep expanding the scope of the suit; you can file your own suit. "It could have an impact on hundreds of industries."

The matter is scheduled for Friday, February 21.

Recently, a group of India's top Bollywood music labels, including T-Series, Saregama, and Sony, sought to join a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI in New Delhi, raising concerns about the improper use of recordings to train AI models.

According to the 31-page OpenAI court filing, which was first reported by Reuters, the Microsoft-backed company stated that it is not obligated to enter into partnership agreements with media groups to use publicly available content.

What exactly is the case about?

Back in 2024, Indian news agency ANI sued OpenAI in a New Delhi court, accusing the ChatGPT creator of using its published content without permission to help train the artificial intelligence chatbot, which OpenAI claims it has stopped doing.

ANI released the following statement: "the court is required to decide the legitimacy of the use of publicly available proprietary content by AI platforms."

ANI also accused OpenAI's ChatGPT of attributing fabricated news stories to the publication in a court submission dated Monday, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters.

In its statement, OpenAI stated that it was collaborating with many news organizations around the world and was in talks to explore additional, similar opportunities, including in India
