Crystal Palace recorded one of the most surprising wins in the history of their club by defeating Liverpool in the penalties match and winning the 2025 FA Community Shield at the Wembley Stadium 3-2.

Both teams played out a 2-2 draw in the regular time with the game going to penalties where the Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson grabbed the headlines as he saved two of the penalties to give his side its first-ever Community Shield.

The game was off to a fast start. After only four minutes, Liverpool got a goal by their new star Hugo Ekitike, who combined splendidly with Florian Wirtz who is the most expensive player in the club.  Palace responded in the 17th minute through a composed finish by Jean-Philippe Mateta who scored a penalty after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr.

Soon afterwards in the 21st minute, Liverpool took the lead through a fluke goal by Jeremie Frimpong whose cross flew over Henderson and into the net. The occasion was accompanied by a moving salute to the dearly departed Diogo Jota, as signs were put on display during the 20 th minute.

Palace refused to back down. In the 77th minute, Sarr leveled the score, firing past Alisson Becker after a slick pass from Adam Wharton. Late drama saw a VAR check for a possible handball by Alexis Mac Allister, but the call went Palace’s way. In stoppage time, substitute Justin Devenny nearly snatched the win, only to be denied by a desperate Liverpool defense.

The penalty shootout was all about Henderson. He stopped shots from Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah blasted Liverpool’s first attempt over the bar. Devenny stepped up to score the decisive penalty, sending Palace fans into a frenzy. “I thrive in these moments,” Henderson told, grinning, as he recalled his FA Cup final heroics against Manchester City.
