Violent fights broke out in the stands at The Bank Of America Stadium in Charlotte between the Uruguay players and the Colombian fans following Colombia's victory against Uruguay to advance to the Copa America 2024 finals. A number of well-known athletes were present during the altercation, including Darwin Nunez of Uruguay and Liverpool, who had to be restrained when he seemed to hit a spectator.

Risk To Families

Defensor Jose Maria Gimenez of Uruguay said that some Colombian supporters had been hostile toward the Uruguay players' families who were seated in the seats with kids in tow. "Our family was in danger, this is a disaster," "With our tiny newborns, we had to enter the stands to rescue our loved ones. We were there defending our own, and there was not a single police officer in sight," Gimenez remarked following the game. Marco Bielsa claims that because he had already entered the changing room, the Uruguayan coach was not present to witness the event. "I hurried to the locker room as soon as I noticed there was a fight taking place in the midfield. I mistakenly believed they were expressing gratitude to the supporters, but later found out there were, regrettably, some issues there. When questioned about the circumstances, Bielsa said.

Postgame Scenes of Violence

Images of Darwin Nunez being struck in the face by a fan and of him striking a supporter in the tumultuous aftermath of the game have surfaced many times. When Luis Suarez was spotted fighting with a few players and coaches after the final whistle, there were already moments of tension building. Following the violent incidents, CONMEBOL, the organization that oversees Copa America 2024, issued a forceful statement saying, "CONMEBOL strongly condemns any act of violence that affects football." Our work is motivated by the belief that soccer fosters connections. Our work is founded on the belief that the good ideals of soccer bring people together and foster connections. Violence and hatred have no place on or off the pitch, according to the group. "We encourage everyone to support their national teams with all of their enthusiasm and to throw an incredible party in the remaining days."
