Bharat Matrimony has become a craze among singles looking for partners and this is a matrimonial site that became embroiled in controversy when a woman by the name of Swati Mukund claimed that her photograph was used by the company in a fraudulent profile that misrepresented her. The profile baselessly asserted that she had met her spouse from the website. After Swati highlighted the platform's insufficient profile screening, Bharat Matrimony has now responded with an explanation of how the incident occurred.

In a statement to NDTV, BharatMatrimony CEO Murugavel Janakiraman explained that the controversial profile was mistakenly believed to have been created on EliteMatrimony, their premium matchmaking service. However, it was actually set up on a different platform within the BharatMatrimony network.

Janakiraman also stressed that BharatMatrimony allows third parties, for instance, parents, and relatives, to register profiles on behalf of members which constitutes about 25% of their user base.

Although this function aims at helping families in the matchmaking process, it is sometimes abused, leading to the generation of false profiles with images sourced from the internet.

He acknowledged that this is a widespread issue across the industry, noting, "There is no foolproof method to entirely prevent it."

What happened in the BharatMatrimony fake profile incident?

In an Instagram video posted on October 30, Swati Mukund accused Bharat Matrimony of using her photos on a profile she never created and falsely stating that she had found her husband through the app.

The profile in question belonged to a woman named Nithya Raja Sekar from Chennai.

Mukund highlighted that this profile was part of Bharat Matrimony's premium subscription service, which claims to offer enhanced screening and greater authenticity for paying users.

She concluded by advising users to remain cautious when using such platforms.

Bharat Matrimony had already issued a response to the post: "We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. We have suspended this profile and are conducting a thorough investigation on how it got published."
