Angh Enters Oscars 2027 Race After TIFF Platform Prize Win

Angh Oscars 2027 prospects have gained momentum after Theja Rio’s Nagaland-set debut feature won the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival 2026. The victory gives the film an independent route into the 2027 Academy Awards race under the Academy’s new rules.

The film was the only Indian title selected for TIFF’s Platform Competition this year. Its win places Angh alongside Gondhal, the Marathi film directed by Santosh Davakhar that remains India’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.

How Angh Can Enter the Oscars Race

Under the Academy’s new rules, winning the Platform Prize at TIFF allows Angh to enter the Oscar race independently, regardless of whether it is India’s official submission. The film can now compete for a nomination in the International Feature Film category alongside other international titles.

The development marks a significant recognition for Rio, whose feature directorial debut has received international attention following its TIFF selection and award.

What Is Angh About?

Set in Nagaland in the 1960s, Angh follows Anghba, the last surviving chief of an abandoned Indigenous Naga village. After his community leaves, he remains in isolation with his ailing wife and mute young son while confronting a changing world.

The film stars BAFTA Award-winning actor Douglas Henshall alongside Indigenous actors from Nagaland. It is adapted from Rio’s 2021 short film of the same name.

The TIFF Platform jury praised the film for its filmmaking, perspective and portrayal of its world, while highlighting Rio’s vision and courage.

Theja Rio Reacts to TIFF Recognition

Reacting to the award, Rio described the achievement as a special moment for everyone associated with the film. He also highlighted the significance of making the film around his connection to his home, people and culture.

Rio said the story centres on the relationship between a father and son while exploring themes of home, letting go and the transient nature of life. He added that seeing the film connect with audiences beyond its own community was deeply moving.

Angh vs Gondhal in the Oscars 2027 Race

Angh also received recognition through cinematographer Adam Pietkiewicz, who won the TIFF Variety Artisan Award for his work on the film. The 2026 Platform Competition featured 12 films from around the world.

Meanwhile, Gondhal, written and directed by Santosh Davakhar, remains India’s official submission for the 2027 Oscars. The Marathi thriller draws from Maharashtra’s traditional Gondhal ritual and folk-performance tradition and reportedly emerged from a field of 33 films to become India’s official selection.
