Aamir Khan's YouTube Release of Sitaare Zameen Par Faces Pricing Glitch

By Media Infotainment Team | Monday, 04 August 2025

Aamir Khan’s latest venture, Sitaare Zameen Par, aimed to shake up film distribution by launching on YouTube, but a pricing glitch left Apple users paying ₹179 instead of the promised ₹100 rental fee.

The error frustrated fans, prompting a quick apology from Aamir Khan Productions.

The film, a touching sequel to 2007’s Taare Zameen Par, hit YouTube on August 1, bypassing big streaming platforms like Netflix or Prime Video.

Directed by R.S. Prasanna, the sports-comedy-drama features Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh, and a remarkable cast of differently-abled actors.

Khan’s vision was to make the movie affordable and reachable for audiences, especially in areas with few theaters, while still championing the cinema experience.

The team addressed the issue on X, saying, “Our sincere apologies We just became aware that the cost to rent our film Sitaare Zameen Par is reflecting as ₹179 on Apple devices. We are trying to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding”. The hiccup likely comes from Apple’s 30% fee on in-app purchases, which the production team didn’t factor in when setting the rental price.

With ₹267 crore earned globally since its June 20 theater release, Sitaare Zameen Par has won praise for its warm story and commitment to inclusivity. Khan’s YouTube strategy has sparked excitement and debate. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta hailed it as a “bold step” for giving filmmakers more control and widening access. However, some question whether it’s a practical model for all, as it misses the steady income of traditional streaming deals.
