This Japanese-French project, produced by Asmik Ace, Studio Outrigger, and Miyu Productions, was a highlight at the 2024 Annecy International Film Festival’s Animation Day. The story follows Keitaro, a young man obsessed with recreating the “Shuhari” firework, a mystery linked to his missing father, at the 330-year-old Obinata Fireworks Shop facing closure. When his childhood friend Kaoru returns from Tokyo, they team up to unravel the firework’s secrets, blending themes of youth, tradition, and determination.
Shinomiya, famous for his work on Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name and The Garden of Words, steps into directing while also crafting the story and script. The film features a stellar crew: Utsushita (Heavenly Delusion) designs the characters, Akiko Majima (Suzume) handles art direction, and Shūta Hasunuma composes the score. Newcomers Riku Hagiwara and Kotone Furukawa voice Keitaro and Kaoru, joined by Miyu Irino and Takashi Okabe.
