Produced in more than 2,000 screens, Kannappa received good critics because of its religious story line and star lead cast with Prabhas in a lead roll as Rudra, Akshay Kumar as Lord shiva, Mohanlal as Kirata and Kajal Aggarwal as goddess Parvati. Enhanced as it was with the contributory roles played by Mohan Babu, R. Sarathkumar and Preity Mukhundhan.

This movie was based on the story of Bhakta Kannappa, a hunter who became a devotee of Lord Shiva, and spoke to people especially in its emotionally poignant finale. Trade critics claimed that the opening was impressive and initial projections indicated a gross of Rs 13 crore in the opening weekend in global markets, strengthened by the increased numbers of tickets sold in Telugu states and a small collection of $ 25,000 in the North American advance bookings. The fact that Vishnu Manchu has waited 10 weeks before offering the movie on OTT shows an assurance in the movie at the theaters.
