Sony Partners with AMD for Advanced Graphics and Gameplay Technology
The PlayStation 5 Pro is a gaming console that has further enriched its technical advancement. But, like all the other technology, innovations can still be made for a greater leap into visuals and performance. In the new PS5 Pro Technical Seminar, PS5 and PS5 Pro Lead Architect Mark Cerny announced that AMD and Sony are joining forces to push Sony's gaming tech even further. He then mentioned their goals for the future.
Sony PlayStation 5 architect Mark Cerny discusses future tech improvements:
Recently, Cerny ended his lengthy presentation with the news that Sony had indeed begun working with AMD to improve its gaming technology even further. Amethyst is the name of the new project with the following two main goals. The first is to develop such architecture that is most suitable for machine learning and the second is high-fidelity convolutional neural networks for game graphics. Cerny also adds that it's not just for PlayStation.
Cerny stated, “AMD has been a fantastic partner for SIE for many years now, and I’m honored to announce that we have begun a deeper collaboration with a focus on Machine Learning-based technology for graphics and gameplay.”
“Both AMD and SIE share many of the same goals related to advancing the medium of video games,” he added.
The collaboration may result from the compliant backing the two companies have given one another to push gaming tech even further. We should apply this to what PlayStation has already achieved with things like PS5 Pro, possibly beginning showing results with future console iterations such as the inevitable PS6. Cerny discussed three explicit concepts and their future potential for growth: rasterized rendering, ray tracing, and machine learning.
According to Cerny, rasterized rendering holds the least potential of the three areas, with improvements coming from using a more powerful GPU or faster memory. However, for ray tracing, there is definitely growth as the technology is still pretty new. Cerny believes that we will see "quantum leaps" in the next decade. And machine learning is the other one that holds the highest growth potential, which would lead into its current focus at AMD and Sony.
Even if it is not expressly stated, such results would probably end up delivering values in PS6. Considering that the PS5 Pro is just launched, and that this "deeper collaboration" is just going public today, the fruit of that endeavor may take a while to be seen.
