Rohit Sharma Retires from Test Cricket Prior to England Tour
Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of India's Test series against England. India captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, ahead of India's Test tour against England, which begins on June 20. The Hitman announced his decision on Instagram, posting a picture of his Test cap alongside a text stating that he will continue to represent India in ODI cricket.
Rohit Sharma, who previously announced his retirement from T20Is following the 2024 T20World Cup, has now officially retired from Test cricket as well, putting an end to speculation about his future in the longer format. This decision follows his underwhelming performance at the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
It will be interesting to see who will take on the leadership role ahead of the crucial England Test series away from home.
Rohit shared the news on Instagram, writing: "Hello everyone. I'd just like to announce that I'm retiring from Test cricket. It has been an incredible honour to represent my country in white. Thank you for your love and support throughout the years. "I will continue to represent India in ODIs."
Rohit Sharma's Test captaincy record
At 38, Rohit retires as one of India's best Test players in the latter half of his career. He scored 4,301 runs in 67 Tests, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties, for an average of 40.57. Rohit also led India to the World Test Championship final against Australia and was an important member of the team despite recent slumps in form during home and away series against New Zealand and Australia, respectively.
Rohit Sharma follows MS Dhoni's footsteps
The Hitman's retirement announcement coincided with a surprising coincidence: his retirement post was uploaded at 19:29 (IST), the same time as his former captain MS Dhoni announced his retirement. Not only that, but both captains had played their final home Test at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, followed by a final Test appearance in Australia.
