Oscars 2025: "Laapataa Ladies" Chosen as India's top Entry

The Film Federation of India announced on Monday that Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies”, a softly ironic look at gender dynamics and Patriarchy in rural India, is the nation’s top choice for Oscars 2025 entry.

The Malayalam National Award winner Aatam, the Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light, and the Bollywood hit Animal were among the 29 films that went into the selection process for the lighthearted parody on patriarchy that is the Hindi movie. 

The heart breaking and inspirational story of two brides in rural India in 2001 who accidentally switch places during a train ride is told in Laapataa Ladies. Aamir Khan Productions and his wife Roa’s Kindling Productions are producing the movie.

Kiran Rao is rapturous that her movie Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official Oscar submission. The filmmaker says the acknowledgement is a testament to the team’s diligence and he is now curious to go ahead with the project. 

Next year on March 2nd, the 97th Academy Awards will take place.
