Newly Edited Version of Empuraan Set to Hit Theatres Soon
The Malayalam film L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal in the lead role, is set for re-release. This decision comes after key changes were made following public controversy sparked by its March 27 theatrical launch. The latest edited version of L2: Empuraan is set to launch in cinemas during Monday evening or Tuesday morning.
The decision to re-edit Empuraan comes in response to backlash over certain scenes, notably those depicting riots and rape, which sparked heated debates across Kerala and beyond. These contentious elements have been excised from the film, with the makers aiming to address audience sensitivities while preserving the essence of the narrative. Despite the controversy, Empuraan has been a box office juggernaut, currently screening in 4,000 theaters across four languages and crossing Rs 100 crore in just two days. The film’s massive appeal remains undeterred, with 4,500 shows on 746 screens in Kerala alone on its opening day.
Mohanlal, who reprises his role as Khureshi Ab’raam, issued an apology on Sunday via Facebook, expressing regret for the “mental distress” caused by the film’s political and social themes. “As an artiste, it is my responsibility to ensure my film does not harbor hostility,” he stated, signaling the team’s commitment to the edits. The revised version of the film, with its 17 edits and reduced violence content, was shaped through suggestions proposed by both producers and officials at the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Directed by Prithviraj and scripted by Murali Gopy, Empuraan features a stellar cast including Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, and Indrajith Sukumaran. While the edits address the uproar from right-wing groups and political factions, the film’s global success bolstered by a Rs 67.5 crore opening day gross, underscores its cinematic impact. As the revised Empuraan prepares to roll out, fans eagerly await whether these changes will reshape its legacy or further fuel its unprecedented run.
