Netflix Set to Unleash 'The Summer Hikaru Died' Anime in 2025

The Summer Hikaru Died from Mokumokuren is set to become an animated series for global release through Netflix. This adaptation of Mokumokuren’s work is set to arrive worldwide during 2025 while presenting its eerie story through visually striking content. The recent announcement of The Summer Hikaru Died anime adaptation has excited horror and anime fans worldwide as production details are kept under wraps for an undisclosed premiere date.

The Summer Hikaru Died appeared on Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace Up website from August 2021 and uses its unsettling mix of friendship and supernatural elements to build a loyal fan base. The story follows Yoshiki in Kubitachi Village after his schoolmate Hikaru Indou returns from the mountains changed into something supernatural. After recognizing the impossible similarities between the “Hikaru” and his deceased friend Yoshiki understands he deals with a supernatural being. The narrative proceeds through madness to deliver a profound study of identity alongside grief and the enigmatic as it stands out in horror manga.

The anime adaptation under the direction of Ryohei Takeshita (Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night's director) is developed by CygamesPictures. Through Takeshita's direction fans will experience an accurate yet fresh adaptation of the manga which will intensify the manga's unsettling atmosphere. Kadokawa will present AnimeJapan 2025 along with voice actors Shuichiro Umeda and Chiaki Kobayashi as Yoshiki and Hikaru who will appear for a special presentation alongside Kadokawa's dedicated exhibition of the anime world at the event.

The Summer Hikaru Died emerges as a top anime selection for 2025 among Netflix's expanding anime portfolio. The combination of psychological horror elements with emotional depth makes this production ready to attract existing manga fans and new viewers seeking fear through storytelling.
