Meta AI to Utilize the Personnel Data for the Training of AI Models
This Monday, Meta stated that its platforms would be utilizing the user’s interaction with AI, public posts, and comments for the training of artificial intelligence models in the European Union. This action was followed by Meta after the launch of AI technology in Europe last month. This has given rise to the previous regulatory concerns on data protection and privacy.
According to the plan, the Meta AI was supposed to be launched in June 2024 in the EU, followed by the launch in the U.S. in 2023. But due to the strict European privacy policy, the launch was postponed to March 2025. With the new announcement of the Meta AI, the European Commission has chosen not to comment on Meta’s action.
The Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, will be utilized in the data training of AI technologies. The users will receive notifications explaining what kind of data the company will be extracting. If the users are against this action of Meta, then they can take up the form sent through the link in the notification.
The company has stated strictly that they would not be using the private messages and public data of the users who are under the age of 18. But the data regarding the public queries and questions on Meta AI will also be used for the training of AI.
The Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) has informed the Meta AI company to postpone the plan for now. The company has faced the backlash from advocacy group NOYB, which demanded the national privacy monitors put a stop to such actions.
With regard to the same plans, Elon Musk’s X and Alphabet’s Google are also under the watch of the Irish Privacy Regulator. X has been involved in the investigation over the use of European users personal data for the training of Grok, an AI system.
