  • So Ji-sub Shines in Netflix’s Mercy for None, a Revenge Thriller with Flawless Action

It stars So Ji-sub as Nam Gi-jun, who used to work as a hitman in Joowoon gang but quit the criminal world when he cut his Achilles tendon. Years later, his younger brother Gi-seok (Lee Jun-hyuk) dies in mysterious circumstances, dragging him once again into the violence-riddled world to reveal the truth and take bloody vengeance. Gi-jun of Joowoon gang lacks identity in a tough criminal environment where two gangs (Joowoon and Bongsan) have an uneasy truce till Gi-jun gets involved in a quest that ruins the truce.

The fight choreography of Mercy for None is magnificent, as it incorporates both dramatic and highly appealing realistic brawls and bears elements of a classic noir style. Every single scene containing boisterous club fights and a Computer cafe brawlings, to perfectly tended showdown scenes are presented with a superb camerawork that makes every single punch an art exhibition. So Ji-sub gives a strong performance as the emotionless but sensitive Gi-jun, ably assisted by an excellent cast, consisting of Huh Joon-ho, Gong Myung and Lee Beom-soo.

The action scenes of the series are usually praised, but it has also been criticized that the plot tends to feel somewhat predictable and excessively complicated which relies largely on typical elements of the genre of revenge. The story is sometimes put at the expense of visual appeal, with less than satisfying reasons behind some of the characters. Nevertheless, the burden of sorrow, which Gi-jun has experienced, and the risk of his actions make viewers stay glued.

Currently ranked No. 10 on Netflix’s global streaming charts, Mercy for None is a binge-worthy thrill ride for action fans. Its blend of raw intensity, top-notch production, and compelling performances makes it a standout K-drama. Catch it on Netflix now for a bloody, unforgettable journey.
