Google Makes Deep Research AI Free, Adds New Gemini Features
Google has made some significant updates to its Gemini app, adding new features and making some of the old ones free. The changes include enhanced Deep Research, linked apps, and the addition of customisable Gems.
Among the major updates is the enhancement of Deep Research using Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental. Google, through a blog, reports that the upgrade enhances Gemini's functionality throughout the entire process of research, including planning and searching, reasoning, analysing, and reporting.“Gemini now shows its thoughts while it browses the web, giving you a real-time look into how it’s going about solving your research task. By pairing Deep Research with this new model, we expect the quality of reports to keep getting even better,” stated Google in a blog.
Deep Research is now accessible worldwide in more than 45 languages. Gemini users can try Deep Research several times each month for free.
The Gemini app now features an experimental personalization feature driven by Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental. By linking with Google apps and services, beginning with Search, Gemini is able to provide responses customized to individual needs, according to Google. For example, it can offer restaurant suggestions based on previous food-related search queries or provide travel tips based on earlier searched locations. Users are always in control of their Search history and can unlink it from Gemini anytime.
Google also indicated that integrated apps are getting more robust with the addition of Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Photos on the 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model. This addition enables Gemini to process complex requests with multiple apps. For instance, users can request Gemini to locate a cookie recipe on YouTube, include the ingredients in a shopping list, and find nearby grocery stores that are open. Over the next few weeks, Google Photos will be integrated, allowing Gemini to build travel plans from photos or remember things such as driver's license expiration dates.
Gems, which enable users to tailor Gemini to particular tasks, are now free for all users. Users can build custom Gems, like a translator, meal planner, or math coach, by giving instructions and a name. Files can also be uploaded to give more context.
